Think of a journey through the modern supermarket ...

You enter a brightly lit, welcoming store, each shelf laden with the widest choice of food and goods to search through and purchase.

A typical supermarket will have about 20,000 different items. Each with its own price and 'special deals' - "buy one get one free!", "half price" ... how is all this tracked and kept up to date?

Answer: a stock and price computer system.

Once you have bought your goods, you move on to the cashier to pay...

Most customers use debit or credit cards.  These are swiped at the till, along with the discount or loyalty card.  Money is automatically transferred from the customer's account to the supermarket's account.

An itemised receipt is printed out, detailing every item purchased and its price.

All in all, ICT plays a important part of the modern supermarket..
